The Joys of Sleep Deprivation

As is too often the case, sleep is an issue with me again. Or rather LACK of sleep. Insomnia sucks. So does a stomachache. Yup. Which is why I figured it was time to drag myself out to the kitchen and mix up a small glass of what works for me. That would be organic apple cider vinegar, baking soda, and a little bit of water. It works better, and faster, than any antacid I’ve ever tried. It’s kind of nasty, but I can handle a bad taste…IF something works.

Well…also if I don’t have to have too much of it.

Anyway, as is also the case when I desperately need sleep, funny thoughts tend to come to mind. Trust me, there isn’t a whole lot that’s amusing when it comes to vinegar and baking soda.

Unless you happen to be running late for a meeting, and you have a bit of indigestion and decide to saveΒ  1/100 of a second…by skipping the water.

Yup. I poured about two tablespoons of the vinegar in a small glass, added half a teaspoon of baking soda, swirled it around a couple of times and tossed it allΒ  back like a cowboy chugging a shot glass of whiskey in Miss Kitty’s saloon (Gunsmoke reference for those who don’t have a clue what I’m talking about).

I’ve never tested this theory again. Probably because I intend for the first experience to be the last experience. But I found, at least in that instance, that baking soda doesn’t really dissolve in vinegar.

And I know this because I had half a teaspoon of wet baking soda in my mouth.

Now half a teaspoon of baking soda isn’t that much. Not really. Unless it’s wet, and unless it happens to in your mouth. Then it feels like…oh…maybe two cups.

Because it gets everywhere. I must have gulped a quart of water to get that gritty stuff rinsed out.

And moral of this story is… Two tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar and half a teaspoon of baking soda will get rid of nearly every case of indigestion. But only if you use a little water with it.

Of course if you’d like to prove me wrong, have at it. Maybe I didn’t swirl it in the glass long enough. If you try it, let me know how that works for you.

I’m going to try to get some sleep now.

    I also am having trouble sleeping. First one thing and then another keeping awake. I also suffer from heartburn. I am going to give you remedy a try next time.

    • Ooh…I hope you got some sleep, Nelva. Mine is from a couple of years of getting 3-4 hours sleep every day. Now that I can sleep more, my brain seems to be wired for the 3-4 hours. But I keep working at it. One of these days I’ll start getting 7 1/2 again (perfect for me).

      What is your heartburn remedy? Does it taste better than vinegar and soda? I wouldn’t mind something that didn’t make me pucker up when I take it. πŸ™‚

  3. Wow, that’s awful stuff. I hope you can rest and tame the tyrannical tummy too Kristy. Did you get the freezing rain and slop too?

    • It’s not as bad as you might think. I use a straw, which also helps. But to me, it’s nowhere near as bad as a Rolaids or Pepto Bismol (?). I can’t handle chalky stuff and, as long as I never pass on adding the water again, this works…and it works much better than the other stuff. At least for me.

      Oh yes about the slop. It was terrible here. But at least the power didn’t go out, which was my biggest fear. Now the roads are ice and slush free, with 57 forecast for tomorrow, followed by snow on Wednesday. We do have it all in Michigan, don’t we? πŸ™‚

      • Indeed we do have the weirdest weather. My wife is from California and been here long enough to see why the natives say if you don’t like the weather, wait a while – it will change soon enough.

  4. Ewww! I’ve done the baking soda and water thing, but never knew to add cider. I’ll have to try that – and I’ll make sure to *add* it to the water, and not substitute it!

    • It actually isn’t as bad as it sounds. The baking soda really cuts a lot of the sour from the vinegar. But there’s just something about the combination (found it on the Earth Clinic website)…it just works, and it works very quickly.

      Yeah, you REALLY want to make sure to add the water. I can’t be 100% sure, because I will NOT try it again, but it could have been because I didn’t mix it well enough. But it’s not worth trying again to see. πŸ™‚

  5. Great writing as usual. As for your recipe for an upset stomach I like mine better. A tiny pearl of Optiflora/Probiotic or a small capsule of EZGest works great for me. You know the brand name of course πŸ™‚ either of them work in just a few minutes. πŸ™‚

  6. That’s a great recipe Kristy. We all walk around acidic because we eat highly acidic foods. I have never mixed baking soda with apple cider vinegar. I take either one or the other as was prescribed by my doctor. Or, you can drink the juice of lime. It turns alkaline in your stomach. And by the way, if someone is suffering from the hick-ups, that also is a sign of acidity. Viruses and bacteria cannot survive in an akaline system, so your remedy is good for a lot of things that ail us. Along with the apple cider vinegar, I will add powder vitamin “C” to the mix to support my immune system. It helps me sleep too. Thanks for sharing this info! πŸ™‚

    • I was trying to find the link on the Earth Clinic website where I got the recipe, but I can’t find it. Apparently both help to alkalize, even together. But neither one on its own helps indigestion. I don’t get it too often, but sometimes…

      I’ve heard of the hiccups being caused by that. The powdered C helps you sleep? I may have to try that. I take a lot of C during the day (tablets) because they help keep me more alert, but I’ve never used the powder. πŸ™‚

  7. I’ve tried many things to improve my sleep, but this one’s new to me. I hope it helps! I’ve heard that smarts and insomnia often coexist. Nice thing to ponder during wakeful wee hours… πŸ˜‰
